Until recently the Korean scientific community been hesitant to engage with the creationists, fearing that it could increase the credibility of the movement. However, silence is no anymore an option.

What is Evolution?

The word "evolution" originates from the Latin word for unrolling or revealing, but the concept itself has a myriad of meanings as it has taken form in the fields of science and in other fields. Some early evolutionists, like Jean Baptiste de Lamarck and Erasmus Darwin (Charles's grandfather) believed that existing species changed into other species in a predetermined fashion. The term"transmutation" was coined by Lamarck's student embryologist Etienne Geoffroy Saint Hilaire, to describe this notion. Charles Lyell, who published the second volume of his Principles of Geology in 1833 challenged this notion and borrowed the term "evolution" from Geoffroy's student to describe the notion that species are evolving into different species in an orderly and predictable manner.

Evolutionary biologists define evolution more recently as a process by which living creatures develop traits that increase their chances of living or conceiving offspring. Over time this genetic variation can cause the emergence of entirely new physical or biological functions in the population. Natural selection is the mechanism that triggers most evolutionary changes. Non-genetic changes, such as an increase in muscle mass due to exercise or diet, cannot be considered to be evolution since they don't pass on to future generations.

Creationists make the argument that evolution is controversial, despite the fact that it has been proven true by thousands of scientific tests and it has stood the test of time. They argue that the theory shouldn't be taught in schools. In South Korea, creationists won a few victories over evolution in textbooks for high schools. In South Korea, a group called the Society for Textbook Revise (STR), an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research is urging the removal of textbooks on the evolution of horses as well as the Avian ancestral Archaeopteryx.

Although these are alarming developments, it is also important to remember that the evidence for evolution is overwhelming. The evidence for evolution is based on a variety of sources, such as fossils, genetics and the behavior of living creatures. The evidence is also independently verified by other scientists.

OECs aren't as well-known, but their beliefs are as passionate like those of YECs. OECs believe the universe and Earth are billions of years old, and believe that evolution is a lie.

Both forms of creationism deny that scientific principles such as natural selection and biogenesis can explain how life started on Earth. They assert that evolution is inconceivable because it would require miracles. The founders of modern scientific thought shunned miracles because they feared they would lose their credibility.

Some creationists accept both naturalistic evolution and special creation, and call their belief "theistic evolution." This is also referred to as "continuous evolutionism" or the "evolution of the created species." In this belief system, God creates the original species, and then allows them to evolve over time. These evolutionary changes will eventually produce new species similar to the original.

Others believe that God created the universe and all living things in a single event, referred to as the Great Flood. Creationists believe that the first species were created simultaneously, and that they grew slowly afterwards. They also reject the concept of abiogenesis and argue that the creation of self-replicating organisms from nonliving matter is not possible.

In general, creationists are against teaching evolution in schools. This is supported by numerous professional organizations which include the National Science Teachers Association, the Association for Science Teacher Education and the American Anthropological Association, and the Geological Society of America. Some academic institutions and scientists, however, are more flexible and allow evolution and creationism to be incorporated into their curriculum.

What is Creationism?

When people think of the concept of creationism, many of them think of the United States. However, South Korea is also home to an anti-evolutionist movement. Publishers of high school textbooks have recently announced that they will remove references to evolution from their textbooks. The Society for Textbook Revise, an independent body that is an offshoot of the Korea Association for Creation Research (KACCR) is the one who has led this campaign. STR has secured its first victory by removing examples of the evolution of the horse and an avian ancestor called the Archeopteryx from textbooks. STR claims to have the support of 4,000 families and individuals. Its goal is to weed out what it believes is the "atheist materialism" that reflects a hopeless worldview for students. The root causes are unclear however, they could be related to religious beliefs and the lack of full-time creation scientists across the country.

The KACR achieved many things through its seminars and lectures in the past. It publishes a bimonthly magazine, Creation, and has published books. One of them is a textbook on the natural sciences, with a creationist viewpoint, which sparked interest in college communities. In 1991 the year 1991, a minister and professor started teaching Creation Science in one university and it is taught to this day.

On August 6 and 7, 1993, KACR hosted a second International Symposium on Creation Research. The event was held in conjunction with the opening of the World Expo in Daejeon. Six lecturers from around the world including ICR's John Morris, Duane Gish, and Steven Austin spoke to audiences of several thousand. KACR and its members have been giving lectures on creation science at major seminaries, too. KACR intends to establish a Creation Science Education Center.
